Level: For those who are willing to think!
Spend a day with Hilary of “Mother Earth” Designs, and learn the basics of creating a pattern that uses the Top-stitch Curved Piecing technique - the main building block for her art quilt patterns.
Participants will manipulate curved lines, and gain a comprehensive understanding of what goes into the thinking behind creating their own pattern, complete with embellishments such as couching, bobbin-stitching, sheer overlay and bead trails.
NOTE: This is a workshop for pattern designing only – there will be no sewing involved. Each participant will create their own black line drawing, complete with embellishment markings, ready for making their own piece of quilt art. Final designs will reflect the individual’s experience and design ability.

What a fun way to use up scraps of fabrics – woven bands of cloth make up the base for this “Book Wrap”. Then the fun really begins, as we add all sorts of embellishments, to personalize and glitz up the front cover. You can make a book wrap for anything: Photo Album, Guest Book, Telephone/Address Book, A Novel, Journals… And they make lovely gifts too! |

You will be amazed at how simple it is to create with curves using this technique. No more sewing only straight lines! Hilary will walk you through the technique process, explaining the approach in 3 easy steps. Soon you will be flying along wondering why you didn’t learn this sooner. |

Along the way, Hilary will offer embellishing suggestions such as use of sheer overlay, free motion stitching, beading, watercolour shading and accents, and hand embroidery. At the end of the day, you will have a small landscape quilt top prepared, and a thorough understanding of the techniques used in Hilary’s “Mother Earth” designs.

Come and have a day of fun! First we’ll dye the raw fleece with ‘Kool-aid’ and then you’ll discover the process of how to make felt from wool, by hand. There will be no use of chemicals – only family safe products that are easily obtained, so you can do more at home on your own! Participants will make several pieces of hand felted pieces, and a few felted wool balls (they make great cat toys!).

Offering a smattering of techniques applicable to a variety of artistic endeavours, Hilary Rice will fill your day with fun and creative energy. Participants will learn about some of the techniques used by Hilary in her textile art - such techniques as Transfer Foiling, Silk Paper Making, Metal work and Toner Transfer, to name just a few.
